Gackt Kenshin

It was particularly fine for me a few years ago when I discovered my idol was going to portray one of my favorite historical figures in a tv drama.

The idol being GACKT, the personage being Uesugi Kenshin, warlord of Japan 500 years ago, an enigmatic figure who is now revered (in western parlance deified) for being an honorable, righteous and incidentally canny individual.

Now GACKT took a personal interest in the figure he was playing, and over the past five years has formed an attachment to the people of northern Japan in Niigata, the old prefecture of Echigo, which Kenshin once ruled. At the time GACKT was making the drama, the area suffered from a devestating earthquake, so GACKT agreed to take part in their annual Kenshin Festival to help restore the economy, as well as starting an aid fund of his own.

Unlike other actors who have taken part in the Festival riding in cars, GACKT dons full armor and wig on horseback, along with (in one year) one thousand volunteers in period armor at the height of summer, as well as takes part in the battle re-enactment. Recently GACKT has brought his tours to Niigata and formed an All Asian-music festival that is hosted there.

GACKT'S back again this year august, and really, there's no one else I think Niigata wants to see as their much beloved Kenshin. thanks gacktarmy for link!

Oh for a desert island, with fruity frozen drinks, Japanese boy band members as minions and internet access.

Sour Cream Muffins

1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter room temp
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream

optional
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon for topping

Mix together sugar and butter until blended (you can use mixer for this) add eggs, vanilla extract and sour cream and stir by hand until blended. In a small bowl combine dry ingredients, add to wet mixture and stir by hand until blended. Grease muffin tin or use paper liners before filling, sprinkle cinnamon sugar ontop of each muffin before baking in 350 degree oven for 15-16 min until golden brown. Will make a very soft moist muffin.

Makes 12 large muffins.

Cabin Pressure Fic Recs

Cabin Pressure is a BBC Radio comedy about a small airline, MJN (My Jet Now) actually an 'air dot' as it only consists of one plane. I found out about this comedy because Benedict Cumberbatch (SHERLOCK) voices hapless pilot Martin Crieff.
