In Japan, there was a very famous general named Uesugi Kenshin, back in the Warring States era about 500 years ago, he is revered, and has a shrine, and very many dramas and plays and books and manga and games are created with him. He was called the Dragon of Echigo, his home was in the north, what is now Niigata prefecture. Back in 2008 Gackt played Uesugi Kenshin in a costume drama called Fuurin Kazan, which was wildly poplular, bringing him to the attention of a new audience of fans, who might have just known him as a pop/rock musician.

Niigata, back in 2008 was suffering as the result of a massive earthquake, so Gackt decided to take part in their annual Kenshin Festival, to bring tourist income to the area, (which means dressing up in armor and riding a horse for miles in the heat and taking part in a staged night battle with hundreds of costumed warriors) brought in thousands of people, a rousing success. Gackt has participated in the festival now for five years (with one break) and has now become identified with Uesugi Kenshin, here is some footage of the festivals.
