Cos it's made for me the best realised comic movie (Marvel) since Iron Man, it didn't have to play with Three Days of the Condor but it did! And got Robert Redford in as well, and it made some nice paralells with history, which actually made it more frightening for me.

(SPOILERS)

When Cap sees the Project Insight helicarriers which are heavily armed and linked to satellites, he states that S.H.I.E.L.D. is trading freedom for fear (The helicarriers manifest The Patriot Act, where Congress gave then President George W.Bush the powers of indefinite detention of suspects, the ability to search without consent or knowledge, the ability to monitor correspondence without court ordered warrants, and many of the aspects of the Patriot Act have been struck down in courts of law as unconstitutional)

The helicarriers will use an algorithm to spot terrorists before they strike and take out a threat preemptively (here Cap states ‘don’t you have to commit a crime first’) refers directly to The Bush Doctrine, which withdrew from international treaties after 9/11, stating America had the right to premptive war, to strike first at any perceived enemy to defend the nation, even if that threat was not immediate, which gave the Bush Administration reasoning for invading Afghanistan and Iraq.

Incidentally, among the targets are fellow Avengers and heroes, Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Banner (The Hulk)

When Captain America withholds information from Alexander Pierce, he is marked as a fugitive This is paralleled by media attacks against whistleblower Edward Snowdon (who leaked NSA documents regarding government surveillance programs that use illegal means and processes) as well as the investigative journalists who have published those documents.

Captain America is assisted by Natasha Romanov - a neat coincidence for Edward Snowden who sought asylum in Russia (the script was written long before Snowden sought asylum in South America, but was not allowed to fly from Russia.)

Cap states (when Fury tries to ‘save the remnants of SHIELD after they’ve been infiltrated - since it’s inception - by HYDRA) that everything has to go The USA Freedom Act seeks to end bulk collection of data under the Patriot Act.

Natasha Romanoff decides to release all SHIELD records onto the internet - much as Wikileaks has released thousands of records and videos from various sources over the years pertaining to the abuse of civil rights law

Dr. Zola, a HYDRA scientist who worked with the Nazis and then went to work for SHIELD is a reference to Wernher VonBraun and his teamwho developed the V-2 rocket which bombed London - his team of engineers was taken secretly to the US after WW2 (Operation Paperclip) he was lauded for his work for NASA on the early space program.
