I remember dozens of the first type of fic when the movieverse fandom exploded, some of which were very good. I'm fairly sure there were a couple set in the BBCverse when I was active there. Definitely there were fics addressing the second type of storyline. Some were on AO3 so you should be able to find them with some poking around.
