Friend and I were talking bout one of my other fandoms, BLEACH, the Japanese manga and anime. And she was saing how she's as much as ever into the manga and anime, but the fandom can bring her down, all the hating on this character and that.

And I said, you know what I notice in my new fandom?

The hate on the main character, you know, SHERLOCK HOLMES. Someone even made a com just for people to write fic where he gets his comeuppance.

I kind of don't get it, is it Benedict's portrayal? Is it the writers making the character more antisocial? I would think if you didn't like the main character, you wouldn't care for the show ... I haven't seen this sort of trend in canon Holmes or Brett Holmes or even RDJ Holmes.

When I saw the pilot episode, (where there was a kindler, gentler Sherlock) it didn't have the divine spark of the first episode. Benedict has said his portrayal changed as he interacted more with Martin (Freeman) as Watson. I adore edgy, snarky and dangerous Sherlock because it's refreshing, it's electric, Benedict and Martin are of equal talent, it's fantastic to see them push each other to greater heights.

Moffat and Gatiss want and need Sherlock to change and develop over the course of however-many-shows-we are lucky to get. If John Watson is to make Sherlock a good man as well as a great one, we have to see Sherlock change. He won't always be as antisocial, I think Benedict can still keep him intriguing.

If I had a wish, I'd just like to see John and Sherlock as men in their thirties, and involved with cases as well as each other. You can put Sherlock through the wringer in a fic, but he has to rise above it, he has to be great, or he's not Sherlock Holmes.
