Er, not sure I quite agree with him. He may well *aim* to do that, but firstly the historical context does and did shape the original character(s) (it is not just about top hats and hansoms vs designer coats and texting either), secondly (to me, and to some other commentators) his Sherlock is much less not only likeable, but admirable (not for his skills, which are authenically spectactular in the modern context, but his character) - I, too, cannot imagine Sherlock as we have seen him so far being described as the "best" man anyone has known, bias of a friend notwithstanding. I will be interested to see how they develop the characterisation in S 2.

As for writing Sherlock fic without reading ACD, I'm with you. Why deny yourself the pleasure?

I and Mr Tweed very much looking forward to TTSS...if it proves the success it seems likely to, sequels almost certainly will follow.
