I can't say I'm overjoyed with 'The Great Escapist' I think problems in it were pacing, not script issues, Ben Edlund had a lot of ground to tackle getting us to the finale. B-
The scenes were quite herky-jerky, there wasn't a lot of flow, not to mention the concept of Kevin being held by Crowley at the same time the brothers thought he might be dead, threw off some of the tension of worrying what was happening to Kevin.
the majority of the tension in this ep was - what is happening to Cas, what is happening to Kevin, what is happening to Sam. Certain scenes stand out, Kevin giving his videotape message and insanely angry at his circumstance as prophet, then apologising to Sam and Dean for failing.
Cas hiding from the angels in various Biggerson restarants across the US - because they were all the same, the angels could not find him. Naomi was fantastically reprehensible, and I love me a good villain, killing the human Cas was about to save a vicious twist.
Now Crowley showing up as a way to save Cas was intriguing, as well as the idea there was an angel working with him (this new breed of angel doesn't like to shave?) I liked the idea of bullets made of angel blades, but that Naomi fled in front of one, not so much, I liked the ol' banishing trick.
Sam had a great scene with seeking redemption through the trials, knowing with his demon blood he's not pure. Awws. And him recalling stuff from their childhood was hilarious. Ice bath Sam also a win.
(I have noted some fans complaining about a mention of a trip to the Grand Canyon, now, Dean in the past mentioned wanting to take a trip there, but didn't quite say they'd never been before, so rather than being a continuity error, I thought this was a nod to past eps.)
But I was disappointed a bit in Metatron, I guess I supposed he'd be snarky, sort of like Gabriel, rather than just being sad when the Winchesters chided him for ducking out on any responsibility and sitting back and reading while humanity went to hell (literally) the idea of him hiding out with native americans was a bit intriguing but didn't go any futher.
YES DEAN WHY DIDNT YOU TAKE KEVIN TO THE BATCAVE? I suppose here at the end, Kevin is staying with Metatron, while Cas will be in the bunker, possibly the only place he is still free from Naomi's influence.
Crowley has the angel tablet, and doesn't know the last trial will be 'curing' a demon. Since Castiel was supposed to protect the tablet from angels (and anyone else) as his mission, is he going to be trying to get it back, Crowley can't read the angel tablet without a prophet who hopefully is being guarded by Metatron, but if you have Metatron as an ally, do you even need the tablets or prophets?
