Overall a fun popcorn movie that everyone can enjoy, some lighthearted moments, hope in the darkness, intriguing premise, great battle set pieces, on the other hand, needed some more female characters, better writing. That aside, not disapointing at all! I hope they make a prequel!
And btw, fanfic writers will eat this world up with their OTPs of choice with a spoon.
(spoilery bits)
The other jaegar teams were great, particularly the Chinese triplets of Crimson Typhoon, I would have loved to see more interaction between the teams, not just the Americans and the antagonistic Aussie.
Again, all male leads with the exception of the great Idris Elba were white.
Would have been great to have one of the scientists a woman, or one of the techs a woman.
You had great diversity in the crowd scenes, but again all male, with the exception of the scenes within the underground bunker.
There needed to be some chemistry between the leads and while I saw a bit of chemistry between Raleigh and his brother, it wasn't there between Raleigh and Mako (though Charlie did try) he did choose Mako as his partner (a bit galling that the man had to give the female agency)
I minded having Idris Elba's character be suffering from radiation poisoning, yes it was a result of him being a Jaeger pilot, but it did rob his sacrificial act at the ending with the thought, oh he was going to die anyway.
Great set design, great mecha design, but the Kaiju were a bit indistinguishable, and i did note someone's complaint that all the fighting was in darkness and or rain. I would have loved to see some colourful Kaiju, so you could really tell them apart, much like the Ultra Kaiju, who are beloved.
I did mind that the weakness was seen as the woman on the team, despite the fact that the male half of the team had lost his partner/brother because their Jaeger had disobyed orders. I hoped Raleigh was brought on as advisor, and he'd have to fight to get on the team.
