That's kind of like my Gran's recipe, except hers calls for beating the whites and yolks separately each with 1/2 of the sugar, then folding them in to the lot.
Note: you have to be careful and not get any of the yolks in with the whites or they won't beat well.
Wonderful stuff, but it has quite a kick, so I always put a little warning note next to the bowl!
You can use rum instead, but as Southerners, we always used bourbon.
