I was dreading this after the lackluster running on fumes season nine which pretty much tanked my interest in the show. But it's not awful.
We open with Sam torturing a female demon for news of Dean (yawn) and then flip back four weeks earlier, where Sam in the bunker is wearing a sling (due to Jared having an offset accident) looking up demon lore and calling Cas because he has a lead on Dean, who escaped with Crowley, leaving behind an inexplicable note 'Let Me Go'
Cas is coughing and weak because he's losing his stolen grace, so Sam decides to go look for Dean on his own. We then cut to Dean singing karaoke, then banging a random chick from a bar before Crowley busts in, worrying about Dean sullying his bed. Seems Crowley wants to be pals with Dean, but Dean - rather than do anything more evil than beat up the guy stalking his hookup - would rather bet on fuseball games.
Cas meets up with angel Hanna, who wants Cas to join her in hunting for the rouge angels Daniel and Adena who didn't go back up to Heaven, even though Cas is sick he agrees.
An ex-Marine now hunter has got his sights on Dean, while Dean fights off demons who are after him in revenge for him killing Abbadon.
(who uses fax machines anymore?)
Sam discovers that Dean has become a demon and threatens Crowley via phone. Crowley informs Sam that Dean is still Dean, not just a random demon filling the meatsuit (though it's never explained how this works - it's a lot of exposition) Sam vows to save Dean while Crowley taunts that he and Dean are besties. Sam using his awesome skills tracks the call via GPS and gets their location.
Hanna and Castiel find the two rouge angels at a campsite, Cas votes for taking time to convince the angels to go back to heaven.
Crowley admits sending demons after Dean to 'keep him sharp' Crowley wants Dean to see the bigger picture. Crowley let Sam track them so it will force Dean to join him.
Sam's car breaks down inexplicably, and the ex-Marine Hunter shows up to 'help'. He has rigged Sam's car, then captures Sam. (bytheway, he's tiny compared to Sam)
montage of Dean drinking and singing karaoke, Dean's hookup berates him for being 'a bad guy playing good' Dean gets to prove he's demonic by calling her a skank, and she wanders off thinking she deserves this treatment. (see if Dean were really demonic, he'd make the girl feel great with compliments, etc, so that he can break her down more.)
Back at the angel sigil strewn campsite (why have the sigils if they didn't keep away Castiel and Hanna?) Daniel feels he's found a friend in Castiel, while the two female angels Hanna and Adena are the ones who are hard-line about their pro-and-anti angel stances and begin to fight each other. Castiel kills Daniel to save Hanna. Adena runs away.
Ex Marine tells Sam that he and Dean go 'way back' Sam tries to convince the guy Dean is a monster now, the guy says Dean was a monster 'many moons ago' but now he's 'prey'. (because of a random reference to a brother, I'm gonna assume Dean caused the death of this guy's brother and he wants revenge now that he's no longer human and aka safe to go after)
Ex Marine calls Dean while Dean's driving away from the bar, threatens to hurt Sam, but Dean's not playing, he won't come for Sam. He promises that he will kill Marine boy if he ever finds him.
I had read a review that stated while this ep wasn't bad, it didn't seem like a ground breaking, exciting season opener either, more like a mid-season ep, with lots of exposition and an underwhelming demonic Dean. Which I can say is a fair assessment.
I also had a review of the Supernatural Season 10 special, and again, very underwhelming, not very good clip selection or editing, and the segment on fandom, expressed by really brief shots of fanwork and then fans screeching while watching last season's ender was lame, come on, no pics of cosplay, or conventions?
