much exposition, much of the story telegraphed
we open with the reason why miniMarine (Cole) wants to kill Dean, because back in 2003 Dean killed his father (but inexplicably, miniMarine looks 25 years older than his child self, not 10 years older which is what we are led to believe) younger Dean works well on first shot, but the second shot of him closeup looks obviously shopped onto another actor, sigh) I also think I recognize the staircase from Bobby's house.
Sam tries to convince Cole that Dean had reasons, including the monsters he knows, vamps, etc. Meanwhile Dean's at a strip show, and the song 'cherry pie' was also used back in season four, when the angel Anna appeared to Dean in a dream, also in a strip show) Dean's misbehaving, so we get a montage of Sam getting beat up by Cole while Dean's beating up the strip club bouncers.
Cole gets interrupted by a call from the fam, allowing Sam to grab keys (with a handy mini knife attached) and escape. But this may be Cole's plan, he'll follow Sam to Dean. (though it looks like Sam left his hunters backpack behind)
Cas and Hanna are at a dock, Cas can't heal his stab wound, so Hannah obliges. (It occurs to me that they have hired a woman who in coloring and profile appears to be a female Castiel.) Sam calls and reveals that Dean is a demon, (I wish there had been a better way to get this information across so Misha could have a better opportunity to sell this moment of shock - a phone call? Really?)
Hanna tries to convince Castiel that the Winchesters are a bad influence. Cas states that they are his friends. Castiel almost falls asleep at the wheel, and the couple miss getting hit by an 18wheeler (shades of the season one ending of SPN) and Cas' car goes off road.
Dean and Crowley hang out at a bar, more info drop about the Mark of Cain, (Dean flashes his black eyes regardless of who may be around) Crowley is trying to convince Dean that he needs to kill to satiate the Mark (though this was supposed to keep Dean from becoming a demon, so now is it supposed to keep him a demon? And also Cain, who had the Mark, didn't need to kill) Crowley offers to facilitate Dean's death addiction by getting him to kill 'deserving' people instead of civilians, and sets up that a gorgeous blond woman (Mindy) was cheating on her husband and wants a divorce, (shown with a very cheesetastic soap opera/porn style scene, hopefully indicating the entire story is bogus) and he made a deal with the ex-husband to kill Mindy.
For some reason Dean agrees to the kill. Crowley states he will share something else with Dean.
Cut to Cas' now wrecked gold pimpmobile, where Cas and Hanna have been picked up by a female mechanic (Kitty's Auto Repair) who inexplicably gives them the run of her house and fridge, instead of dropping them off at a hotel. (maybe cos they're angels?) Hanna is now taking on the role of angel confused at human culture, and she takes care of Cas (who has passed out on the couch)
Dean lurks outside of Mindy's house (she's making food in a bright blue minidress and jewelry) he tests the front door (with First Blade in hand) the ex husband (Lester) is watching from his car parked on the street. Dean pops up to chat with Lester, flashing his demon eyes. Astonishingly enough Dean lectures the guy on a) being at the scene of the crime b) getting mad at his wife for cheating when he was cheating on her - when he explains that men cheating is science, Dean punches him in the mouth, probably making him lose a tooth or two. When Lester taunts that Dean is a 'punk ass demon' who is there to do his bidding, Dean stabs him in the stomach.
Sam is tracking Dean, showing up at the strip club. Sam gives the bouncer a card 'Lemmy Kilmister' FBI. Cole is lurking nearby watching the exchange. (did they cast this guy for his resemblance to Robert Patrick? the 'liquid metal cop' in Terminator2?)
Cas and Hanna have been allowed to stay overnight in the home of the mechanic, and Cas is woken up by a little girl playing Roadrunner cartoons (ref to season eight cartoon episode where Cas referenced the Coyote and Roadrunner as Man's Search for the Divine - It also appears that when Hanna healed Cas's stomach wound, she was also able to dry clean his clothes) the little girl and Cas have a 'tender moment' Kitty the mechanic seems to think Cas and Hanna are together, and says it's too bad (they aren't a couple)
Crowley is in a meeting with two demon henchettes in an empty bar. Female demon henchette with 80's hair lets Crowley know that Sam Winchester is nearby. Dean appears, and lets Crowley know he offed Lester instead of Mindy. Dean doesn't care that Crowley is upset he killed the wrong person. Dean pushes Crowley down, and the demon henchettes look pleased about it. Crowley wants Dean to 'pick a bloody side' demon or human, but Dean says 'or what?' Dean states he and Crowley aren't besties, and he doesn't work for Crowley, and wants him to stay out of his way. Crowley says Dean isn't 'relationship material' and says he and Dean are 'done.'
Cas and Hanna head out on the road (with Hanna driving) meanwhile, Crowley shows up beside Sam (Hello Bulwinkle) Crowley wants to give Dean to Sam because he is uncontrollable (must be the Mark) and wants a 'finders fee'
Cas wakes up in the pimpmobile, outside the childrens' play area that is a gateway to Heaven (season ender 9) an angel (in the shape of a large woman) tells him she took 'the express elevator upstairs) Hanna goes to speak with Metatron, who is in a cell, wrapped up in a straight jacket. Hanna admits to Metatron that she wants what remains of Castiel's grace (used to close the gates of Heaven and toss the angels down to Earth) Metatron makes a deal that if he gets out of Heaven's jail, he will give Hanna the grace and leave for another planet and Hanna will never see him again. Metatron implies that Hanna wants Castiel back to full power, as a leader, so that someone will take care of her (the angels) doing this in a way that seems to emphasize that she's in a female form and Cas is in a male one. (which, eh, I'd rather not have, combined with the woman's assumption that Cas (to all appearances a man) and Hanna (to all appearances a woman) belong together.
But when Metatron implies Hanna is desperate to be dominated she slams his head into the bars of the cell. Cas shows up to put a kibosh on any deal. Metatron refers to Cas as 'Asstiel' Cas reminds Hanna that he has made deals in desperation and they've always ended in blood and tears. Castiel states that it's his life and choice (to die if need be) and he doesn't want a deal with Metatron.
Hanna agrees with Castiel and apologizes. When she leaves, Metatron states that he wasn't lying about the grace surviving. Castiel states that he is alright with his fate, and that he enjoys the idea of Metatron being locked up for good. Metatron states that when he gets out 'everybody dies'. Metatron calls Cas a 'dead man walking'
Cut to Dean who's playing a piano in a bar. (sounds like the chords could be 'Dean's theme' played throughout the show) Dean cuts his hand with the blade and watches it heal, as his eyes go black. Sam walks in, and Dean knows he's there.
Dean asks who winged Sam (Sam's sling) but then doesn't seem to care about the response. He reminds Sam that he wants Sam to let him go, and Sam won't agree to that. Sam admits that Crowley sold Dean out.
When Dean approaches him with the Blade, Sam reminds him that they know how to cure demons (from a spell in season 9) Dean just walks to the bar, and states, if he wanted to be cured, he wouldn't have 'bailed' When Sam says 'we will fix it' Dean says that he's doing all he can not to rip Sam's throat out. He's giving Sam a chance to leave.
Dean won't leave with Sam, asks if Sam will kill him, Sam shakes his head, says no. When Dean says he might have it coming, Sam admits he doesn't care (while walking closer) You are my brother and i'm here to take you home. Sam takes out a pair of (ordinary) handcuffs (even though they had demon cuffs for Crowley, from the bunker dungeon) but before he can put them on Dean, a tear gas canister gets lobbed through the bar window by miniMarine Cole.
Sam stumbles out of the bar (affected by the gas) and Cole (who threw it) knocks Sam out with a punch. Dean walks out, unaffected.
Cole mentions that he was the one who was going to hurt Sam. Dean doesn't know Cole. Cole tells Dean that he killed Cole's father, but Dean admits he can't remember, and he doesn't care, he's killed so many people 'they all get blended up'
Cole confesses that he spent half his life, training for the moment to kill Dean (which actually makes me recall April the Kitsune's son in season 8, who saw Dean kill his mother and state he'd kill himi) Cole states that he's better than Dean, Dean tells him to prove it (by shooting him) but Cole says 'that's not payback'
and pulls out a hunting knife.
Dean easily defeats Cole, and tells him he's 'not as good as he thinks he is' (the quick spate of dramatic music during the fight is annoying) and they use some kung fu moves on each other while Sam wakes up and ducks back into the bar. Dean references The Princess Bride by saying 'what did you think would happen, my name is Inigo Montoya you killed my father prepare to die'
Cole cuts Dean's face and watches as it heals, he asks 'what are you' and Dean's eyes (inevitably, not surprisingly) turn black and he states 'I am a demon' (would have been more effective if they had not used this already three times this episode) Dean whales on Cole, and puts the First Blade on his neck, Cole decides to shout 'do it' for some reason, and we wait for Sam to come to the rescue ... Dean decides not to kill Cole and Sam appears with Holy Water.
Sam then slaps the normal cuffs on Dean and says 'stop its over' Dean just growls and glares at Sam. (what no black eyes now?)
With Dean stowed in the Impala, we discover the price from Crowley handing Dean over was the First Blade, he promises he's going to keep 'the precious' away, but c'mon, we all know it's simply to have another hold on Dean. Crowley makes a 'getting boned' joke, Sam tries to threaten Crowley, before getting into the car, Dean makes glary eyes at Crowley.
Meanwhile, Cole, who's still bleeding, shows up at the library to get all their books on demons. (what he can't use internet? and if he knew all about Dean Winchester and his brother, would he not have hit on all the supernatural stuff around them?)
Crowley has the blade, and seems to be mourning his lost friendship with Dean, looking at pics on his phone, while his minions warn him of meetings.
Sam, driving home, remarks on how filthy the impala has become (and again, it's been referenced the car is the boy's home) and Dean remarks that 'its just a car'
Sam says Dean 'has gone dark' and Dean replies 'you have no idea' (but that comes off as weak when Demonic Dean has hardly done much to be evil, including not killing Mindy, and not killing Cole, or various strippers, waitresses and bouncers, but only Lester who could be viewed as 'deserving it') though, Dean tells Sam in the car that he did the worst thing possible to Cole - ie, whipping his ass. He's also determined to wreck Sam in some way.
