BAFTA Winners 2011

Benedict very stylish in black velvet suit with his trademark sparkly black shoes, and Martin elegant in his suit with a great spotted tie and pocket handkerchief!

CONGRATS TO MARTIN FREEMAN for Best Supporting Actor Sherlock

Alas, Benedict did not win for Best Actor with Sherlock, but he SO DESERVED IT.

Am I allowed to gainsay that IMO Daniel Rigby deserved it more? Because, seriously, he was bloody brilliant as Eric Morecambe, who was a National Treasure throughout my childhood, so although I do feel sorry for BC on a personal level, I still think the right actor won.

Sorry. Pleased for Moffat/Gatiss/Freeman though, and the date was right ;-)

Thing is, I didn't see Daniels performance, but I do know that Benedict hasn't been picking up awards for Sherlock, don't know if it's a case that people think he's young and he'll do more, and there is a season two of Sherlock on the way. It is really a trend in US awards that men only win after a string of good solid performances, while women tend to win in ingénue roles. Go figure.

A columnist in the Radio Times was actually remarking how young the nominees were compared to the past, and this was Rigby's first major TV role (he's a stand up comic/stage actor normally), so I don't know. I really think that, despite all the BC fans' understandable disappointment, this wasn't in any way a vote against him, or a judgement on his career, but a vote *for* Rigby who was just astonishingly good, plus more than a touch of nostalgia for the late, great Eric Morecambe.

I can't say what the thinking is in respect to the other missed awards, though. It may be as you say, and he'll get lucky next year.

I liked that Benedict said that the press making the award(s) a race between Sherlock and Dr.Who was a disservice to the other nominees, and he'll have his time, doubtless.
