I really can't imagine two more different personalities than those of Sherlock Holmes and Benedict Cumberbatch. (Do let's keep in mind that I don't actually know the actor except for what I see and read about him on-line.)
As do his roles in other productions. I was absolutely overwhelmed by his portrayal of Stephen Hawking and admiring of his performances in To the Ends of the Earth and Amazing Grace - all characters so dissimilar. (It was actually depressing to realize I couldn't ever see him in Frankenstein.)
OMG - there's a *filmed*version*?? Bah, don't know what I'm getting so excited about - middle Tennessee is quite a long way from London...and there's all that water... ;p
What do you think are the chances the NT film would ever be released commercially?
Oh you didn't know about NT Live? They were showing the filmed production in cinemas around the world, I was able to see it at a theater near me - only the Benedict creature version, not the Miller, though some venues showed both. *note, actors not nude because of the wankers in cinemas who had cameras to record.
I don't think we will see the filmed version on DVD ever, though some fans pimp for it and sometimes say it will be - why? None of the filmed plays at the NT have ever been released, and none of the actors or the director or the playwright ever agreed that their play would become a DVD, I don't think Benedict for one, or Miller would agree to it, taking away from the whole idea of live theater in the first place.
Yes, I did know about NT Live, only I thought they were actually satellite-bounced broadcasts of the play, live, from the National Theatre. The showing nearest to me was about 200 miles away and practically on the eve of a bit of scheduled surgery. I understand now.
And, understanding, I agree with you completely: the play should never be released on DVD. As you suggest, it would take away from the purpose and meaning of live theatre.
Well, now that we have that sorted, may I add a tiny note to say how very much I admire your artwork - if I spend much more time at your DeviantArt site, I'm sure I'll have to start paying a toll. The t-shirt - Compassion - which you created to aid Red Cross Japan is the favorite out of my entire collection.
I don't know if all were satellite bounced because my play with Ben was out of snyc with the schedule, but, I do know they film versions of the plays as well to keep in their archive, so if you were to go to NT, you could see Benedict in After The Dance and Frankenstein!
thanks on the artwork, that Compassion will always be precious to me, because of what I believe in and who and what inspired it.
