1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

When I was oh about ten or so I started writing stories in Tolkien's worlds, but I wouldn't say it was fanfic because they were all OCs, I began writing fanfic when I got on the computer in 02 and saw people writing LOTR fanfic, and I read some very good fics with hobbits.

2 - Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

Lord of the Rings, (+RPS) Death Note, Gakuen Heaven, Yami no Matsuei, Bleach, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core, Harry Potter, Sherlock, I'm blanking on any others right now.

3 - For each of the fandoms, what were your favorite characters to write?
Sam/Frodo, L/Light, Niwa/Nakajima Muraki/Tsuzuki, Byakuya/Renji, Genesis/Zack, Harry/Draco, John/Sherlock (as you can see, all canon pairs)

4 - Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

Frodo and Sherlock, why they became my muses? Probably because I've loved both characters since childhood, and I might have formed some of my personality around them.

5 -If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?

I have characters take over, and that's fine, I let them play.

6 - When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

I always write male characters - but my masculine characters have traits of both genders so I suspect my female characters would be the same. I don't purposefully avoid writing female characters, and I never disenfranchise them or make them the villian in a piece (to get the male leads together)

7 - Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

No.

8 - Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

I write OC's to serve the plot, to also see how characters would interact with them, after all, in episodic tv you get OC's all the time. When I think Mary Sue, I think of a character who's too perfect, who solves all the problems, and who seems to be channeling the author, and as I think a whole fic with canon characters is telling you enough about me, I've never felt the need to self insert.

9 - Pairings - For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

Well, I only write for one fandom at a time, and right now it's Sherlock, so John/Sherlock.

10 - Pairings - Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

The only problem I can have is wanting to make PWPs, I can't seem to make characters have sex if they don't want to, lately my fics have become more romantic, in my Sherlock/John they didn't even kiss, and I didn't realize it until after the fic was published.

11 - Genre - do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

They are all about relationships, with humour, among adults, light on the angst.

12 - Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

I've done lots of crossovers, I love crossovers.

13 - Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I never refer to fanon, that's someone else's take on the characters, not mine.

14 - Ratings - how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

I can write explict fine, if I think that the characters and the story need it, there are times I want to go to a higher rating, but it's not needed. And there is a danger in an explicit fic that description slows down the narrative (not in a good way) and you can squick the audience, so less is more. Plus, you don't want it to read like a manual.

15 - Warnings - What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

I put up adult warnings, I tend not to go into too much detail, I've read fics with tons of warnings that had I not known the author, would have made me avoid the fic, and the warnings were not merited (there was no non-con, it wasn't really violent, etc.) and in some cases, if they give an NC-17 rating, and there isn't penetration, I'm frustrated!

16 - Summaries - Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

Short and sweet and enticing, not more than a sentence or two. Like a movie trailer, too many summaries give away the entire plot, and then there is no point in reading it.

17 - Titles - Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

Titles can be important, I try not to duplicate, and I try to avoid titles that are too difficult to remember or sound a bit pretentious (though I've had those) my face title 'A Boy And His Hobbit' I think it personified that fic and helped sell it.

18 - Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

Christ, they pop in my head constantly, my problem is I get too many.

19 - When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

I try to write it right away, lest I lose it later, which is why most of my work are WIPS.

20 -Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

Not really.

21 - Sequels - Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

If the fic is great, I have no problem with sequels. I'd rather had a sequel than a story with 44 mini-chapters (each chapter making a page or so of fic)

22 - Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I did a few exchanges in the past, always a disappointment in getting my request filled, and they don't seem to bring me more readership.

23 - When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

Right now, LJ, DW, sometimes DA and AO3, used to do FFnet.

24 - Betaing - How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

I beta my own fics, I read them over eight times or more before I post, I have spouse brit-pick for me if needed. I have one Beta horror story when I was new to fandom and a BNF author was trying to direct my fic.

25 - Music - Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

I do recall that I was listening to James Bond theme songs when I wrote a particular FF fic that was about as raunchy as I ever wrote, and I did listen to kabuki music while writing a Sherlock and Japanese culture related fic.

26 - What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

Oh god, I research constantly for every fic I write, policies in British government for the handling of children smuggled into the country, how minors are treated in hospital in cases of abduction.

27 - Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

Computer best place, in my office, which I made certain is full of windows.

28 - Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

I did a collab once in fic, where the author won some fan awards and never gave me credit for co-writing, but as a beta, and then took off all credit. I do have some people who have written some fic for my pics which is always nice.

29 - What is your current project or projects?

Original stuff which makes it difficult to work on fanprojects.

30 - Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

Ah, probably - Sherlock the Finder - a fic that crossovers BBC Sherlock with the Hobbit (books) with Martin/Bilbo (WIP)

Phew, hectic Monday!

Anyway. I really enjoyed reading this, and borrowed it to do myself... and it took long enough to complete that I didn't have time to come by here and comments.

Thank you for sharing this!

WOW this took me ages to read because it is so fascinating! I've had friends do this meme and it always makes me think about my own fan activities and engagement. But never enough time to actually fill out the meme - I'd have to do it daily since my answers would take too much time :)

Really enjoyed your answers and lots to think about!
