to put it succinctly, Angels Are Dicks. They appear in the SPN universe to further their own ends, mainly, to hasten the Apocalypse, destroying half the planet in the process because God is Dead (or Missing) and they are all unsupervised children, a large amount who hate the 'mud-monkeys' read humans, that their Father charged them to love and protect.

The main angel character on the show is Castiel, who is modeled after the angels Damiel and Cassiel in the classic German film Wings of Desire and physically modeled after the character in the graphic novel Constantine (trench coat)
The interesting arc of Cas' character (nickname given by Dean Winchester) is that initially he comes on as an unfeeling creature with no free will who slowly becomes more human under the influence of Dean and his brother Sam, but the fall downward is messy and filled with anger and fear. Dean Winchester, who is a great dichotomy of macho-posturing yet the most nurturing male character I've seen on television, becomes like older brother to this incredibly powerful creature.
