Film Rec - Millennium Actress

*just bawling like a big baby after seeing this*

Film Rec - Millennium Actress by Satoshi Kon (2001)

Breathtaking, visually stunning film with an intricate storyline regarding a famous Japanese actress and her career spanning the twentieth century, scenes refer to classic Japanese films and magical realism merges historic events with personal scenes of the main characters, (the actress Chiyoko and her longtime admirer, an aspiring director) a romantic view on how films represent our hopes and aspirations, the relationship of an actor to their craft and the audience to the actor.

I own this film and LOVE IT TO PIECES :) I also have Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika and went to a museum showing on his films. Amazing!

I love all of Kon's work. I was heartbroken when he died. The way the story slips from reality to film is breathtaking. Have you seen his others?

I've seen parts of others, I'm lucky that our local library has a big collection of Japanese classic films and anime.

My favorite remains "Paprika." Visually stunning with references to all aspects of Japanese culture. "Perfect Blue" is another good one. "Tokyo Godfathers" is just sweet. He got a lot of praise and a lot of contorversy for touching on subjects (homosexuality, homelessness) that the Japanese try to deny.
