Supernatural fandom is somewhat notorious for not liking new characters, but they took to the angel in the trenchcoat in a BIG way, Misha Collins (who plays Castiel) is certain that this lead to him being a season regular on the show.
I don't know that the show writers ever thought that fans would ship Dean Winchester and his angel so hard, well, when someone grips you and raises you from Perdition it does form a profound bond.
