Fanfic Meme
1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
I saw the Fellowship of the Ring movie and loved it, my sister was living with me and let me use her computer, I found fanfic and wrote it. I was surprised by the reactions I got on fic and art pretty much immediately, in fact I was quite spoiled, I didn't know that I had reached a level of popularity so quickly.
2 – Name the fandoms you’ve written in, and how much you’ve written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
LOTR (fps and rps) no longer writing
Yami No Matsuei - nlw
Gakuen Heaven - nlw
Harry Potter D/H - nlw
Bleach - nlw
Final Fantasy Crisis Core - n/w
Sherlock (current)
Supernatural (will write)
(and there are possibly others but I've forgotten them)
3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
LOTR - Frodo/Sam
YnM - Tsuzuki/Muraki
GH - Niwa/Nakajima
HP - Harry/Draco
Bleach - Byakuya/Renji
Final Fantasy - Genesis/Zack
Sherlock - Sherlock/John
Supernatural - Dean/Castiel
4 – Do you have a “muse” character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn’t about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
For these fandoms - Frodo, Muraki, Nakajima, Draco, Byakuya, Genesis, Sherlock, Dean. I can see that each of these characters could be considered the 'main' character, but they all share a complicated past and they are pretty damaged, and the people they pair with tend to be their caretakers of a sort in canon - or rivals.
5 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your “muse” or not, what did you do about it?
I sometimes have a character being moving and acting differently than I planned, and I go with it.
6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
I love writing fully rounded realized characters, I think I'm waiting for the right woman to walk into my head.
7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Nope. I've read fics that bring a depth to a character that isn't in canon, but I like the characters as they appear in the original book/film/show, if they are too far away from it, that's someone's original character.
8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they’re not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
Yeah I write OCs where I need them for plot, for example, in Sherlock, you need a case (usually) and I like to make the world of the fic as real as possible, so you have people outside the frame. I don't write a character for wish fulfilment, in that sense, every character I write and the world they are in are aspects of me.
9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
Sherlock/John, Sam/Frodo, Genesis/Zach - and this last because it's such a rare pair, but I had such fun writing it, possibly my fave story and incidentally, the smuttiest romance I ever wrote. And once it was written, I never needed to write something that erotically charged again, cos I'd done it. These days I'm doing stuff that leans gen.
10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn’t write, or a pairing you didn’t like, and found you could?
see above. But I don't write anything I don't like. I think that would show in the writing.
11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you’re writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
My fics tend to have humour, romance (in the old Dumas style of Romance, which is derring do and adventure and hand-holding) and I love writing crossovers, I am more of the, put an exsisting character in a different world and see what they do, I don't try to squeeze something new into the character, after all, I love them as they are.
12 – Have you ever attempted an “adaptation” fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
Yeah, I wrote Casablanca as a Harry/Draco saga (where Voldie wins and the magic refugees are fleeing)
13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
CANON. I don't look at other fanfics for characterization or ideas, I have very firm ideas about the characters derived from my impressions of the show. And really, why go along with the flow of everyone else? I'm always looking for something different, I suppose the fandom audience is too.
14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you’re comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you’re writing is G-rated instead?
I've gone NC-17 full frontal, but that was because the story called for it, these days I rarely find I need to do anything explicit at all, and btw, I don't like 'fade to blacks' if the whole story is supposed to lead to magic sex' I don't cop out.
15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what’s the strangest thing you’ve warned for in a fic?
I don't write fics that really need warnings, I warn for language, violence and sexual situations, but I don't gratuitously write scenes involving things that are triggery. I feel that a story should be entertaining, and that it can be dark, or include violence, or have sex, but if you go too long, and into too much detail, it throws the story out of whack, and slows it down, no skimming in my stories, hopefully.
16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Short and sweet, be teasing, don't give everything away (or else why read?) they are the commercials for your stories, and get people to read, so get good at writing them!
17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Titles are sort of the same as above, short and sweet, though I do have at least one very pretentious title!
18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka “bunnies”) from?
A lot of times I dream them, they pop up wholly formed like Athena, so I don't think in scenes, every fic I write has the beginning, middle and end, (I just don't always write the ending)
19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
I sometimes write a header, like a mental placemark, I'm trying to avoid putting up fics that are unfinished (though at times it's an incentive to finish them)
20 – Do you ever get bunnied from other people’s stories or art in the same fandom?
Rarely.
21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
Don't mind sequels, if they don't cover the same ground. Sometimes you want more of a certain scenario. However, I always try to make everything stand on it's own, you don't need to read a previous to get what's going on.
22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you’ve thought about doing? And if not, why not?
Won't do them, too many times I'd do my bit, and nothing to go with it, fulfilled a request, and mine went unfilled, and not much reaction in terms of comments from them. I got enough on my plate anyway!
23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
My journal, sometimes DA, and Ao3.
24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren’t any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
Horror stories of fics being beta'd, and doing the chore for others, I run my fics by my spouse these days.
25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain “mood” to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
I wrote one fic to Bond theme songs. :D That one worked, usually though I have to have quiet.
26 – What is the oddest (or funniest) thing you’ve had to research for a fic?
I had to research what happens to children who come into the UK without guardians and how they move through the system, and how to do a medical exam on a child for a Sherlock/Death Note crossover.
27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
Have to write on computers these days, much faster than hand writing and it has the feeling of permanence.
28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
Not really, but I'd like to.
29 – What is your current project or projects?
Tower in the Void - Sherlock/Supernatural crossover with Sherlock and John helping Sam and Inais rescue Dean and Sam from purgatory, but I don't know if this will get done, I haven't written anything all year.
30 – Do you have a favorite fic you’ve written? What makes it your favorite?
Ah, I guess
'The Fundamental Things Apply' with Sherlock/John humour, romance. (wanted to do sweet and clueless Sherlock John with plenty of humour and didn't realize till long after it posted, they don't even kiss) PG

Cross the Rubicon - Genesis/Zach (yeah the smutty one I wanted to know is it possible to get in character development and world building and relationship all through the infamous 'magic sex' scene) NC-17
