OH SHOW.
Great - episode was tightly paced, packed with mythology plot, and gave us a lot to look forward to for the rest of the season and perhaps beyond.
the big question was, what really happened in Purgatory, and the answer is a surprise, and might I say, a perfect resolution.
The episode opens on people being kidnapped and held by Crowley, who is searching for future prophets, he got the names of the future prophets by torturing our cute little Weenie Hut Angel, Samadriel. (who I was afraid would be killed, but hopefully not) but its a precurser to what happens later in the episode, Crowley is amping up as being the BigBad this season, not the demon everyone loves.
Dean begins the episode by seeing Cas everywhere, and Sam consoles Dean on his loss - which leads to a wonderful replay of one of fandoms fave scenes (where Cas shows up next to Dean in a bathroom, and Dean has to beg for 'personal space) but this time Cas is rough and dirty from Purgatory and says once again 'Hello Dean.' And Dean's not asking for personal space now.
We see Kevin and his Sassy mom hiring a witch (via craigslist) to help them make a 'demon bomb' but as we've never known a good witch on SPN, we can tell from the beginning this is gonna go south. There isn't an explanation of how Kevin's mom escaped her catatonic state, but it's nice to see her so aggressive.
Cas is back, apparently not recalling the events of Purgatory, and again, Dean relates that 'Cas just gave up' (and we get the great sequence of Benny hitching a ride with Dean) Cas appears once more as a clean-shaven Jimmy Novak, down to clean trench, suit and backward tie. Which is a signal that Cas has returned to his season five persona, after he defied heaven to help the Winchesters, still powerful and naive when it comes to human interaction)
Crowley shows up at the Trans - courtesy of the witch - and zaps Kevin away, Kevin's mom bests the demon. Crowley coerces Kevin to read the Word of God (by first killing a prophet and then unceremoniously chopping Kevin's finger off) Kevin reveals that there is more than one 'word of god' with tablets that reveal info on Leviathan, Demons, and doubtless other monsters.
Sam gets a call from Kevin's mom and the four (Cas in the backseat of the Impala where he belongs) head out to rescue Kevin, but not before Kevin's mom hands over the recipe for the demon bomb and Cas and Dean have their heart to heart.
Now we know Dean was confused, sad and angry. And we thought that this was because Dean thought Cas had given up, that he didn't try hard enough to escape.
But it is revealed that Dean's pain was not disappointment in Cas 'giving up', but that Dean has been carrying the burden that he FAILED CAS, as he had failed everyone else in his life.
Cas reveals that Dean has different memories from Purgatory,
Cas didn't go through (the portal) because he felt he belonged in Purgatory to atone for his sins. Which is horrible in it's own way, and absolves Dean of responsibility for him (for everyone and everything). In fact, Cas is astonished that Dean chose to blame himself. (but c'mon Cas, you should know Dean by now)
So we have our two adorable fuckups who sacrifice everything for those they love, it's painful as hell to watch.
Cas is determined to travel with the brothers and help them - but is momentarily taken off to heaven, where the head angel Naomi informs him that a squad of angels broke him out of Purgatory - for the express purpose that he aid help Sam and Dean and give the angels intel - and while Cas protests he will not betray the Winchesters, Naomi smirks and tells him neither he or the Winchesters will remember anything - and Cas is sent back a second later.
Once at Crowley's hideout, Sam cuffs Kevin's mom to the car, Dean kills their informant demon, Sam, Dean and Cas break in, and Cas smites a demon, only to suffer from power loss. Sam smites his demons with the bomb and rescues the prophets.
but despite Dean's warning, Cas goes in to save Kevin, confronts Crowley, shows off a sudden display of angel power and succeeds in breaking the Demon tablet in half, with Crowley taking one half, Kevin the other.
So here we have our premise for the rest of the season - more tablets with more information, Crowley trying to find them as well as the angels, Cas being set up and used against Sam and Dean, Sam and Dean adjusting to life post Purgatory, and Cas and Dean adjusting to well, their new dynamic. It's great to see new possibilities for show, not to mention great acting from Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark Shepard and Lauren Tom.
thumbs way up!
