As far as I can tell, the producers and what not feel that the story as reached its arc, that it was always meant for five seasons and it's best to end on a high note. At least, that's what I'm seeing on bbc.com and what the series related people are saying.

Yeah, I've always seen the producers say that Merlin was only going to run for five seasons.

End of the story arc......plus probably due to a fair deal of restructuring at the BBC they have been considering their budgets.
