An 'A' episode! Surprises, back story, the brothers together again, some great new characters plus ubiquitous demons and sadness.

You know, when I watch the show I like John Winchester and want to know more about him, when I read of him in fanfic, I want to throttle him. He made a lot of mistakes, yes, but he did the best for his boys, and now we get to see what might have been when Sam and Dean meet their long-lost Grandfather Henry.

At least this meeting, in the end, is better than with their mother's Campbell side of the family. We learn that Henry never ran out on little John (PS where is John's mother in all this?) but he went into the future to hide a box containing something important from the fallen angel Abbadon, and he was trying to get to his son John, not knowing he'd meet Sam and Dean instead.

Henry and his female friend 'Faith' were members of a secret society which kept a vast storehouse of Supernatural knowledge, acting like Bobby Singer and Garth in the future - who send hunters on cases and feed them information on the creatures they are hunting. During a ceremony Faith is possessed and follows Henry into the future.

The whole episode throws us a lot of information quickly, btw, the scenes from the past and the costuming are great, and the actor playing Henry bears a good resemblance to Jared in particular, so you can believe they are related, plus get that Dean takes after his mom's side of the family (the Hunters) and Sam the 'Men of Letters'

Now I'm guessing among this storehouse of knowledge are some tablets, perhaps even the angel tablet Naomi is looking for, for which Castiel is a sleeper agent. There are nods to Cas here - one, Henry wears a trenchcoat as an ode to 'Cas'ablanca and the spell he uses needs an angel feather, that Dean just happened to have in the back of the Impala! :D

I never believed in the end that Sam and Dean would leave Henry to Abbadon, it was a nice paralell with Dean's recent Purgatory past that he behead the demon in that way. But very sad that Henry had to die knowing his son John might have hated him, but at least he was in the arms of Sam and Dean.

And next week, Nazis and Golems!

If you ever have time, I rec Hunter's Haven on AO3. It's a John Winchester in Haven story. Love the characterization.

Got a kick out of the fact the demon was played by the actress that played Black Canary on Smallville.

I don't watch Haven so I probably would not know what was going on. Was Jensen on the show when she was on the show?
