Oh my goodness, she looks gorgeous and fascinating!...

... oh God, I'm terrified of Googling her, I can just imagine what the assholes are saying. :( I hope I'm wrong. I hope she's enjoying her crown.

normally, I wouldn't care at all about beauty pageants, but it's great that an american-indian won, not to mention with a bollywood dance, and one who is dark-skinned. Of course people are being asshats. *sigh*

Gosh that is cool - sometimes America surprises me (pleasantly) amid all the crap.

Seconding Amber1960. I stopped watching the Miss America pageant way back because generally the judges go for a certain 'look' and it seems like they don't consider anything outside their standards.

And I swear I stopped watching sometime back before Vanessa Williams.

Now I have to go watch it. It's great to see that standards have finally changed.

I tried watching some of the events (after the fact) and it was excerable, I have no interest in the swimsuit or gown categories, and the talent portion (with the exception of this gal and a few tap dancers) was pretty abysmal. This whole concept is so archaic, not to mention that the hosts were literally shilling for their own projects (like workout DVDs) that they broke into the event to promote, blech. I would be fine if they just stopped it now (well, after they have the first Latina that wins)

Holy shit, I didn't even realize this happened. I haven't watched the pageant since Vanessa Williams had her crown taken away. I didn't stop watching in protest or anything, but what happened to her just killed my interest. I'd heard they've had some interesting wins over the years, like the one Miss America who was hearing impaired, but it still wasn't enough to re-spark my interest.

Now I sort of wish I'd tuned in this year.

A genuine smile, that sells it straight away.
