Grade C
If you come to SHERLOCK for the puzzle and the deductions, there was little here to please, no definitive explanation of how Sherlock survived his fall, because that doesn’t matter to the writers who blithely paper over large holes in the plot with ideas cribbed from fanfiction. You can’t fault the actors or the production, even if some of the ‘deduction’ graphics go on too long and give the feeling of a glossy car ad. Sherlock can’t decide if he is going to emotionally mature or regress, with his fumbling apologies to John for watching his fake suicide negated during the absurd bomb with an off switch scene. Amanda Abbington’s Mary is pleasing, but carefully drawn so as not to offend shipping fans. The standout character in the entire episode is an Anderson driven by guilt over Sherlock’s death into obsession.
Hopefully next week we are back to cases and deductions.
