check on the SPN season eight DVD and there is a whole segment on Misha Collin's character Castiel, who became a fan-fave from the moment he appeared on the show (and brought some divisiveness among some fans) and he's been so popular, that Cas is impossible to get rid of, he's had no less than eight different incarnations - though some of these were with the problem of having a superpowerful ally for the Winchesters, you don't want him to solve their problems, so he's been killed (4 times) and become human, become god, become monster, become an amnesiac, gone insane, been mind controlled, and now human. And after season seven (where Misha was informed by showrunner that he was never coming back) Cas returned (the showrunner did not) and for upcoming season nine, Misha is once again a regular, and in credits just behind show stars Jared and Jensen.
Gee, I thought aloud in a comment to a post, with all this attention, you'd think this character was getting his own spin-off. (gasp) and I know some people who'd be happy about that (either they love Misha, or hate Castiel) while I'd love to see more Misha, I can't quite envision Castiel without Sam and Dean, and the much needed contrast and catalyst he provides to their dynamic. Because while the focus is on Cas and Dean, Cas loves Sam and Sam also loves Cas. I'd love to see somemore Cas and Sam interaction in season nine, but I digress.
now last season, the show writers (wasted) quite a lot of time floating ideas for spin-offs (it seemed) and with the exception of one (by Ben Edlund, a man and his Golem) all failed as even MOW episodes, so if SPN wanted to make a spin-off (and make it successful) it would make sense to take a wildly popular character and give them their own narrative. (and Castiel has not been developed as well as he could because he had to serve the plot) Show has told us they are making a spin-off with a brand new character, never before seen, and the show will be set in Chicago (for some reason) and feature a family of hunters and a family of monsters, but er ... does that sound like Teen Wolf to you, at all? From fan reaction, no ones excited about the new show, and it's difficult to care when you don't have any of the great universe built up around SPN. So it does make me wonder, is it all a smokescreen?
If Misha had to go, i'd at least want him to have Charlie and Kevin as partners, though it would leave the Winchesters lonely. :(

They have a lot in common, between wanting to do right but screwing up, and doing what they thought was best at the time. I am a total Sam demon-blood drinking storyline supporter, and have maintained that Sam always thought he was doing the right thing by trying to save people, although through unfortunate means.
I hope they come up with something sustainable for the spinoff, because whenever Show is done is going to be a dark day for me.
