I would say right now there may be more women readers of sci-fi than men. However, if you went back 25 years, I'm sure you'd find far more male readers. A lot of sci-fi in the 50s and 60s was basically "space cowboys," without much character development. My sense it that shifted in the 70s.
I think it's not a good idea to lump together the sci-fi and fantasy genres, because I'm sure that there are more women readers of fantasy than men. Men in general read less than women, you can find various studies on the web. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14175229
can't speak for others but my husband certainly isn't into genres...OTH, my brothers don't have problems with horror and SPN. (i personally am not a sci-fi/fantasy person and consider SPN more on the "paranormal/horror" side...i was a huge x-file fan and consider that in the same catergory,,,that is, except for the whole alien thing, which i didn't enjoy at all probably because that crossed into sci-fi.)
Not my personal experience, but I couldn't speak more generally as I probably have geekier than average family and friends and several of those are male sci-fi/fantasy enthusiasts.
I'd say "it depends", though that's not very helpful!
When I started out in SF/Fandtasy fandom back in the 1980's every aspect of fandom I encountered (except for Elfquest) was very heavily male-dominated. Online media fandom and popular film adaptations have helped redress the balance with fandoms like SPN and Twilight being very heavily female weighted, but when I go to Classic Who events it might as well be the 1980s because I can count the number of other females on one hand!
I know I've always read lots of SF / Fantasy, my hubby's not a pleasure reader, so doesn't read it, but we both share a huge love of the genre in films and television.
